Gaufest Toledo

Nine members of the club travelled to a city in a far and distant land: Toledo, Ohio. There we met about 1500 other people who share our interest in Bavarian dance, culture, and fun. Some of us had never been to a Gaufest before, and so it was quite an eye-opening experience.

For example, one night I thought the fun was over at 1 am when people started leaving the dance floor and band was gone, but then someone went and got his accordion (Erik Schwarz), and then a tuba player arrived. The party continued late, late into the night as I danced and plattled with new friends. I even found myself sitting next to the Gauvorstand (Tom Vogt) during a drinking song where we lifted a table into the air!

Schroeder’s

We had a large turnout at Schroeder’s, with a special guest from Bavaria... Andreas Knoll! He was kind enough to perform Amboss and Schnacklwalzer with us, and learned how we dance it pretty much on the fly. And since he won at the Bavarian Lion in 2003, it is a good bet all of our men should watch how he dances pretty darn closely.

Sacramento Turn Verein Bockbierfest

Jen, Ashley, Stefanie, Kurt and Fritz travelled to the Sacramento Turn Verein for their annual Bockbierfest. Not only was there a huge dance floor with the Al Gruber band playing (and they played fast), but we also got to watch performances by the Camtia Schuhplattler group, which is the oldest such group in California. They will be celebrating their 50th anniversary soon, which is more than 45 years longer than our group has been in existence. Great performance!

Yet another damn great time we all had at Schroeders dancing the night away. If you have never been to Schroeder’s in the Financial District in San Francisco, go. If you have, go again! I recommend the goulash. : )
